That Whooshing Sound
"Seize the moment. Remember all those women on the 'Titanic' who waved off the dessert cart."
Dear One,
I'm typing this on the 10th of December. You're probably reading it a day or two later than that. And, while I would swear that Thanksgiving was just yesterday, I look at the calendar and my jaw drops in amazement. And I start to get anxious.
But then I take a breath and remind myself that my friends and family are a very relaxed and generous bunch and they're not going to notice if things are sub-perfect. And I also remember that I've ordered or created or unearthed something for everyone on my list. Perhaps not the perfect something...but something...to remind them that they are loved. And I dial back my anxiousness a bit.
One of the tasks I'm woefully behind on this season is finding things for my personal wish list. My younger son texted yesterday to tell me my list was "droopy" and that I should step up my wishlist game. He's right, but I'm not craving things. I'd much prefer gifts that lead to experiences--and they are trickier to put on a list.
We were not expecting to get more of the Union Cowl Kit in the shop, but Kelly worked some sort of magic and we have a wonderful few available. They're a collaboration between Blue Sky Fibers and Malabrigo and the end result is stunning. Blue Sky contributes their newest yarn, Prairie (a blend of suri alpaca and baby alpaca that's soft and light and warm). Malabrigo brings their Caprino to the mix (80% superfine merino, 20% cashmere). Like peanut butter and chocolate, the combination is even better than the sum of its parts.
This might be the perfect gift of the season. In fact, I may add it to my wish list...because isn't knitting an experience?
If you still need a few gift ideas...or you're being told to suggest some gifts for yourself that aren't "droopy" in nature, check out our Great Gifts List. There's something for every budget and not a dull idea in the bunch.
I'm not going to tell you how many days there are between now and Christmas. Or Hanukkah. Or New Years Eve.
I am going to remind you how beautiful this time of year is. In the extraordinary darkness of December, every light seems miraculous. One candle on the table, one lamp in the window, one strand of small white lights on a branch of evergreen can make us catch our breath.
Warmly,
Gaby
