Plan a Self-Care Saturday
“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you."
Dear One,
Is it only me? Or are these spring-into-summer weekends just too jam-packed to be healthy? It doesn't help that the school year is wrapping up and spring sports are hitting their peak. And if you have a yard or garden you know the associated project list is looong in the month of May. And then there are the milestone and holiday celebrations. Sheesh.
Every single thing on the calendar is a happy, positive thing. It's when they start to gang up and take over the weekend that they become overwhelming. I like to think I'm pretty discerning when it comes to allowing things onto the pages (yes, you knew there would be paper) of my planner. But these first couple of weekends in May have gotten out of hand, despite my best efforts.
I cling to the third weekend of the month. It still has blank space remaining and I'm determined to keep parts of it that way. My Saturday will include a morning stop at our local Farmers Market for some herb plants and a loaf of amazing sourdough, I will set some time aside for reading and knitting and a trek in the woods, and I'm thinking about making one, carefully curated commitment:
I'm planning to sign up for Makers Morning at the shop on Saturday, May 16. It's from 10 to noon, so it will get me moving (I otherwise might be in my jammies with a second cup of coffee at that point on a Saturday). It's always fun and inspirational, and I often meet someone new when I go---which is a great way to kick off the weekend.
Other reasons I'm thinking of signing up for Makers Morning are:
--I've committed to the Ranunc-along, but haven't gotten started yet. Are you making one, too? The Ranunculus by Midori Hirose is a favorite of mine (see me wearing a borrowed shop sample above), but I have never actually knitted one of my own. It is high time...and adding Makers Morning to my calendar will get me to knit my gauge swatch. Or at least I think it will.
--It's the last Makers Morning of the season. We don't gather in the summer, so my next opportunity will be in September if I miss this one. And that feels like a long wait.
My wish for you is that your weekends have room for some self-care this month. And, if your self-care includes yarn, I hope you'll join the Makers Morning group on May 16. If you're not local to the shop, perhaps you can gather a few makers of your own for a morning of yarn and conversation!
If, however, your self-care involves a long soak in a tub behind a locked door with no kids and no pets and no phone, absolutely do that.
Warmly,
Gaby
