Let's Work Together!

"No two people knit alike, look alike, think alike; why should their projects be alike? Your sweater should be like your own favorite original recipes - like nobody else's on earth. And a good thing too."

Elizabeth Zimmerman

Dear One,

Last week I complained about not knowing quite what to put on my hands for the chilly mornings and evenings of autumn in Minnesota. I mentioned a new pair of fingerless mitts that Elle had just finished (Rine by Tante Ehm) and proposed that they might be just right for right now.

And what an enthusiastic response we got! We've sent many parcels of yarn out to our online customers...and gotten to hang out with lots of you in the shop as you've chosen yarn and patterns for your own mitts.

Your enthusiasm got your Yarnologists thinking that maybe we all want to knit some sort of mitts (fingerless or otherwise) at the same time! Because that sort of parallel play can be really encouraging. And, if you haven't been knitting or crocheting much lately, a small project might be just what you need to provide some quick gratification.

So, from our hearts and hands to yours, let me introduce you to the concept of Mitt-Ober. No? Trying too hard? How about we simply call it a friendly Mitt-Along which runs throughout the month of October?

What are the expectations for the Mitt-Along?

  1. You pick the yarn and the pattern that suit you. If you're looking for inspiration, we have gathered a small collection of mitt and mitten patterns for your browsing pleasure.
  2. Sign up here and let us know about your Mitt-Ober plans!
  3. As you finish a mitt (or two), please send us a note (or stop in the shop) and tell us what you are appreciating about the project and whether or not you would recommend your mitts to others. We also have a Ravelry Thread, if you are a Ravelry user. It's a wonderful place to inspire and be inspired.
  4. We will send you a sweet token of our appreciation after this Month of Mitts is over!

Here are Elle's Rime Mitts again. I'm dangling them in front of myself like a yarn-y carrot.

I not only admire the mitts themselves, but I'm also a fan of the way Elle wears them. Not content to leave them in the pocket of her jacket for dog-walking, she often wears fingerless mitts the shop on chilly days. They are such a lovely accessory and add a pop of color without hindering her ability to knit or type or eat a bowl of soup.

I'm inspired to channel my inner Elle and I wonder if you might be, too.

Don't we all have a friend who we'd like to emulate a bit? Not because they've got all the answers or because they're the center of attention. More than likely they're neither of those things. But perhaps they carry more calm with them than you're used to...or they are better at thinking before they speak. And maybe it's that they wear their fingerless mitts with grace.

Whatever it is that draws you in, I hope you find time to spend with that person you admire and enjoy. Soak up the good energy.

Warmly,

Gaby
