Let's Be More Analog

“The only real stumbling block is fear of failure. In cooking you've got to have a what-the-hell attitude.”

Julia Child

Dear One,

I have been noticing an upward creep in my screen time that I don't like. If I'm making excuses for myself, I guess I'll blame a pre-election need for information...followed quickly by a pre-election need to escape the daily barrage. But really, I think it's me allowing my digital habit to grow because I'm not being vigilant. I'm resolving (out loud and in front of you, friend) to bring my focus back to my analog passions this fall and winter.

By the way, I love the term "analog crafts", which my fellow Yarnologist Gretchen brought to my attention. Apparently, analog crafts and hobbies are a huge TikTok trend (which seems very ironic) and include all of the things we love to do with our hands...and NOT on our phones. You could expand my list, I am sure, but I immediately think of letter writing, journaling, visible mending, all the fiber and needle arts, cooking, jigsaw puzzling, cooking, bird-watching (a hobby which is growing on me).

Of course we'd love to help you pick yarn for your next knitting or crochet project, But did you know we also carry some hand-dyed embroidery floss as well as needles and pre-printed designs? And have you checked out our Japanese Sashiko threads, which are perfect for visible mending...and really any type of hand stitching? Speaking of Visible Mending, it's worth checking out our whole collection of supplies!

The photo shows a potholder being woven on one of our Potholder Pro Looms. The loom comes with loops to make two multicolored potholders and there are more of the 100% cotton loops sold separately. Talk about analog. Putting my hands on the loom takes me right back to elementary school (when everything was necessarily analog--ha!) but these days the loops are nicer and the finished potholder is larger.

I want to remind you that embracing your inner analog self doesn't need to mean tackling a cardigan or a queen-sized quilt. It might be as simple as writing a post card or baking chocolate cookies from scratch.

Let's work on reminding ourselves of the things that we found satisfying before Wordle and Instagram existed. Let's scroll less and putter more. I think it might help.

Warmly,

Gaby
