Embrace That Thing You're Dreading

“When you come out of a storm you won’t be the same person that walked in. That’s what the storm is all about.”

Haruki Murakami

Dear One,

I am getting ready to host/feed/entertain a whole bunch of family for the upcoming holiday. I have four active lists on my countertop right now. I spent yesterday shopping for a crazy amount of provisions. And the people begin arriving...tonight. We will eat and drink. We will play games and build jigsaw puzzles. We will listen to one another's stories. We will laugh a LOT.

And even though I love each and every one of these people, part of me is dreading the whole blessed four-and-a-half-day stretch. So much cooking. So much cleaning up. So many appetizers. So many logistics. So many voices speaking at the same time.

I quietly mentioned this to a dear friend in a text a couple of days ago and she offered the best advice. She encouraged me to do my best to "enjoy the chaos". And I'm gonna try.

If you've read this newsletter for any length of time, you probably sense that chaos is not something I'm good at. But large numbers of relaxed, happy, playful people are--by nature--going to leave a certain amount of chaos in their wake. I understand this.

And so I will chant my new mantra: Enjoy The Chaos. Enjoy The Chaos. Enjoy The Chaos.

But I think I'll ALSO treat myself to something when the last dish is washed, the last pillow is fluffed, and the last car has pulled out of the driveway...

If you need a light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel reward for yourself, are looking for gifts for a few dear friends, or your special someone needs a gift idea for you:

Darn it! I was so wrapped around my own axle of anxiety that I completely forgot to thank everyone who helped us celebrate the shop's 15th Birthday on Saturday! Thanks for stopping in, telling stories of the olden days, and buying bunches of Dear One bags. We felt truly celebrated.

As this busy season unfolds, please don't forget to reward yourself for all sorts of jobs well-done... whatever those jobs might be. I hope you take the nap, buy the latte, watch the movie, work with the good yarn. You do hard things all the time and it's important to celebrate that good work.

Warmly,

Gaby
