Are We Supposed to Be Grateful for Shopping?

"Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings."

William Arthur Ward

Dear One,

How on earth did Thanksgiving become associated with hard-core shopping?

I guess I can see the trajectory, if I squint a bit: once the fall feast is consumed, we start to lean into the Hanukkah and Christmas seasons, and those seasons involve gifts, and gifts often involve shopping. But the whole lining-up-at-midnight-to-buy-that-bigscreen-tv experience seems like a really far cry from taking time to celebrate friendships and family and the plentitude of autumn.

On the other hand, some of us need activities to suggest to our weekend companions...so maybe shopping (and walking all over the place) are a good idea.

If shopping is a good way to get your group out of the house and off their duffs, maybe change the focus to shopping small. Wherever you are, try to invest some time and money in businesses owned by local folk.

If you're anywhere near Winona, Minnesota this weekend, please stop in and say howdy. We love this weekend and all of the friends we get to see. Also, no promises, but there's a rumor that our scaffolding will be down and you'll be among the first to see the long-awaited new face of Yarnology.

We're open Friday and Saturday, noon to 4 pm!

Warmly,

Gaby
