Summer Playfulness Just for You!

“I can feel a sunshine stealing into my soul and making it all summer.”

Emily Dickinson

Dear One,

Have you run into anyone lately who's insisting that summer's pretty much over after the Fourth of July? That it's all downhill from here? Or is it only me that magnetically attracts these summer crushers?

To them I say, BAH HUMBUG. Summer is in its languid, fruit-forward, best part! And those dog days are weeks away. Our lawn is full of fire-flies in the evenings and mornings are spent sipping coffee on the deck in the perfectness before the full force of the midsummer sunshine hits. What more could we ask from a season?

The plants are planted (but don't yet require much harvesting), the fireworks-filled weekend is complete (much to the pets' relief), the lawn-mowing has (theoretically) slowed a bit in the July heat...and now comes the playful time of summer. Time for that morning bike ride or backwater kayak with your bestie. Time for a root beer float at the local drive-in. Time for a slow-paced dinner on the patio of that new restaurant.

If you're craving a yarny project---but nothing too heavy---we have in the shop the loveliest, summery-est, most playful arrays of mini-skeins you ever did see. The yarn is hand-dyed by our friends at Spun Right Round and there are two colorways: Candy Necklace (left) and Straw Flowers (right). [Aside: Are those not the perfect names?] Our sample is the Venation Shawl by Ambah O'Brien---a perfect summer project. Your mind might be toying with other ways to use these delightful sets, but we fell for the Venation for SO many reasons...not the least of which is that the left-over fingering weight yarn (55 g of it) is enough to inspire you to make a wee something else after you finish the shawl:

For almost as many years as Yarnology has been open, we've had this delightful sample of the Sock Yarn Sweater by Hannah Fettig on display. If you follow the link to look at Hannah's design, you'll see that it has long sleeves and was initially knit in a solid color...so it has, on occasion, been difficult to convince a knitter that this sweater is made from that pattern. But I swear that it is.

The Venation Shawl leaves you with about 55g of charming leftovers. We suggest grabbing a skein of Spun Right Round Tough Sock or Palmer Soft Sock for the basis of your Sock Yarn Sweater (or you may have just the thing in your yarn stash)...and then adding stripes of leftover mini-skein yarn throughout...as the sock yarn spirit moves you!

This is it people! Summer in Minnesota is brief and beautiful---do not let it pass you by! Get in the water, eat the berries, read in the shade. Be as playful as life (and your knees) allow.

Cheers,

Gaby
