Could You Use a Splash of Happy?

“Look at how a single candle can both defy and define the darkness.”

Dear One,
We seem to have officially arrived at that mid-point of winter where the outdoor palette ranges from stark white through every shade of gray. And, while there is amazing beauty out there, it's perfectly understandable if you're craving some rich color.
Some of us are lucky enough to escape for a few weeks to a place with warm sun and green foliage...or warm sun and rosy desert hues. But for those of us who faithfully tromp through winter, I think we can feel justified in splurging on some of the colors that make us happy.

I can hardly think of a yarn brand with a better grasp of saturated color than Noro. It is a stand-alone in the industry. And Noro's newest yarn just arrived last week. It's a beautiful DK weight called Saiun (sigh--oon). It's 492 yards of 70% wool/30% nylon and every single colorway is spectacular.
Because we bought every color of Saiun, the folks at Noro sent us a beautiful sample. It's the scarf/wrap featured on the cover of the current Noro magazine and it's a stunner. Choose any ball that's mostly cool colors and any other ball that's mostly warm colors, grab the magazine for the pattern, and you're set with a fabulous-yet-practical project. Your knitting needles will thank you. Your wardrobe will thank you. Your chilly winter maker's heart will thank you.

I also think there that with this much yardage, there are some fabulous one-skein projects that will bring a much-needed dose of color to our lives. Wouldn't this colorway (#1--Yuki) make a gorgeous Traveler Cowl? Or Everyday Cowl?
The fiber content of Saiun also means this yarn would make great socks, if you're up for knitting or crocheting some snappy DK socks right now.
A couple of Yarnologists were even overheard dreaming of a more delicate, four-season version of the Nightshift--using a skein of Saiun and a skein of a tweedy solid like Alba.
I'll stop, I promise, but can you imagine a sweater? It would be like wearing your own happy, little party everywhere you went. I might need that in February or March. Just saying.

Please do whatever it takes to bring light and color into your days. Light the candles, call the friend, add the flowers to your grocery cart, buy the happy yarn.
You take care, lovely one.
Warmly,
Gaby
